The tree in the compound has healthy looking ilumbikka or ilumban or irumban puli. And I remembered someone saying of the many benefits and virtues of it.
Though it has some extreme pungent taste, I like challenges for the sake of something healthy and plucked four of them and ate them.
Then I sat down and searched. Here’s a message from a researched paper.
“Averrhoa bilimbi has high oxalic acid and regular intake will result in kidney failure owing to the deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in renal tubule,” he said, adding that people are unaware of this fact.”
So, please go slow on this when people recommend for heath sake.
We have this tree at home, we call the fruit ‘bimbul’. It is used as a substitute for tamarind in coastal Karnataka. I did not know about its side effects, haven’t heard of any, Thank you for the info. 🙂
