I have been a keen follower of Intermittent Fasting since the 19th of January 2019. And I follow a 16 hours plus fasting schedule for at least 6 days in a week.

I have some clear positive results which I thought I should share here for my friends.

For one, I have lost some 15 pounds in weight. I feel I am good with many health indicators and measures. My overall discipline has improved tremendously. And most importantly, I look good in the bathroom mirror.

Intermittent Fasting is still the best and perhaps the easiest when it comes to diet and fasting. Here’s how I do it.

I eat during a window of 8 hours or less, usually from 12.30 in the afternoon till 8.30 at night. I have only water during the other hours of the day. (Harvard study suggests eating window of 7 am to 3pm for best results).

Why I said it’s easy! that’s because I eat my favourite sweets and food during the eating hours. There’s no sacrifice. If I eat well, say a ‘keto’ diet, I could have shed an additional 10 to 15 pounds.

Our food digest and gone in 12 hours. And if we don’t eat after 12 hours also, the energy requirement of the body could be by way of burning stored fat.

And when we exercise into and after 12 hours fasting, more fat could be burned.

I have increased the level of workout. This include suryanamaskar, yoga and some intense swimming. Most importantly, I have set an outrageous target for six packs.

It seems to be working. And if it’s good, I want my friends to get it too. We are talking about overall wellness which include better results in diabetes, blood pressure, heart health and prevention and control of scary things like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Cancer.

Even better, there could be production of growth hormones, anti ageing phenomenon and autophagy (autophagy is a Nobel Prize subject and it’s a good idea to read about it) which talks about new cells, repair of damaged cells etc.

Milestone! Lightest in 25 Years.

This is an important milestone. I weigh the lowest in some 25 years, if not 30, thanks to Intermittent Fasting.

It’s important because the weight loss is accompanied by renewed energy, enthusiasm and discipline.

To me, Intermittent Fasting is the best wellness movement that has happened so far. It’s very well explained and proven through some detailed and serious study, which include Nobel Prize winning research.

Benefits of intermittent fasting include generation of new human growth hormones, cleaning repairing and growing cells, prevention and even possible cure to deadly things like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, heart problems and even diabetes.

The increased energy and enhanced mood has assisted me in following a regular fitness and workout schedule like 12 sets of suryanamaskars, one hour yoga, swimming and even weight training. And I feel good after these heavy workouts.

And I Did a 24 Hour Fasting

I am sticking on to Intermittent Fasting as a major wellness program and probably the game changer.

The 16 hour fasting and the rest 8 hour eating window sort of plateaued out with the body weight going constant, though some other benefits are visible.

The best thing in Intermittent Fasting is autophagy, the Nobel Prize winning wellness stage with unbelievable benefits.

To recap, the benefits include prevention and perhaps cure of deadly diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Cancer, heart problems, blood pressure, inflammation and even diabetes.

Nobel Laureate Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi‘s work on autophagy uses the word (translated from Japanese) starvation and not fasting.

I am saying this because there are videos from some so called experts saying that exercise generates autophagy and the benefit from fasting is unproven. Not true at all.

Working out helps but all the genuine research points out to Fasting as the method to achieve autophagy stage.

Coming back to the 24 hour fasting, I got the idea from a neighbor who’s into Intermittent Fasting and who’s looking very good with trimmed waistline and lost weight.

He said, it got accelerated when he started a 24 hour fasting once a week along with the 16 hour schedule on other days.

And yesterday was my first day of 24 hours fasting and I did it with two black coffee during the 17 to 24 hours.

Weight loss appears to be the number one measure in wellness. Looking good is one of the reasons for it while the growing epidemic of obesity is another.

However, the latest finding and what everyone should attempt to achieve as wellness goal is autophagy. It’s brought about by way of intermittent fasting, stressed out exercise and or diet leading to ketosis.

In an autophagy (Greek word for self eating), bad cells are cleaned up and repaired, new good cells grown and even human growth hormones are enhanced.

It’s possible to achieve the autophagy stage with weight loss. Extreme and stressed out exercise is not easy and not for all.

Such a diet is easy said than practiced. Especially for people like me who are more into carbohydrates and that too with a sweet tooth. It’s even more difficult for vegetarians.

Autophagy, the Watchword in Wellness.

Autophagy, a Greek word meaning self-eating is a Nobel Prize winning subject. Perhaps no other medical term is implying more positivity in wellness.

Benefits of autophagy are numerous. We have prevention or repair to many horrific things like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, inflammation, heart health, diabetes and even aging.

I think I have the attention from you now.

Three ways are mentioned as inducers to autophagy.

1. Diet

2. Intermittent Fasting

3. Regular exercise (high intensity, interval)

Diet

High in natural good fat, moderate in protein ( too much protein inhibits autophagy) and low in carbs especially non fibre carbs.

Intermittent Fasting

Fasting, if possible every day (preferably) for a minimum of continuous 16 hours. When you eat during the eating hours, take a look at item 1 Diet

Preferably high intensity interval workout

High intensity is better than moderate and interval training is better to continuous and moderate workout.

Well, each one of the three can induce autophagy to an extent. How about doing all in an enjoyable way! Well like all good projects, team work ensures the best results. Hence my constant invitation to join our small broadcast group where even individual identities are kept confidential.

Personally, I am doing items two and three. I am bad on diet during my eating window. Most of it are carbs, that too non fibre like sugar based and starch.

Now I want to do good things with diet. One of the members in the group reduced weight by 14 kgs in about 6 months on diet and ketosis only. Perhaps this addresses the number one priority of a health buff- weight loss.

Incidentally, stress induces autophagy. I remember going through, while on a family holiday in Cancun, Mexico, something called hydro therapy, where stress was induced by methods like coming out of a hot sauna for a dip in ice cold water.

And we see politicians living longer threatening to cross 100 years. Well this one is only a casual observation.

But we need autophagy and all the allied benefits.

Intermittent Fasting Is Trending.

A few months back, I started a broadcast group on Intermittent Fasting and it’s now proving to be highly valuable.

I started the small group after finding out that the large, mostly Facebook groups with several thousand members are full of stories of achievements beyond our simple imagination.

Our group has mostly known friends and relations and of course there are a few who joined after open invitation on this blog site. And it has the person who got me into IF as a valuable member.

We have not grown much in size, but grown definitely on content. The stories and articles exchanged have made IF a definite way of life. And I am happy to say that the greatest endorsement is with a Nobel Prize in Physiology (medicine) in 2016.

Like all statutory warnings, diabetics are advised to consult the doctor before doing IF. Actually, one of the significant gains in IF is blood glucose stability and insulin control. And like all those taking anticipatory bail, I would also say ‘do consult your doctor, but definitely give it a try’ to those with elevated sugar levels. Those with low sugar issues, may concentrate on its treatment, and take doctor’s consent before joining in.

By the way, weight loss is just a side effect and not the primary goal. But it’s there with better toning up and glow.
