Book Blitz: REED, Men and Country, by Emmanuelle Snow

I am doing a Book Blitz on Book ‘Reed, Men and Country Part 3 by Author Emmanuelle Snow, thanks to Shalini and her Digital Reads Blog Tours.

BLURB MEN AND COUNTRY COLLECTION
Three men. Three stories.
A country music superstar. His manager. And the guy who doesn’t believe in love.

They’re successful, hard-working, and honest.
But their personal lives are far from perfect. Their hearts are lonely and their beds empty.
They believe they have their lives all figured out. Until they meet women who disrupt everything they knew about love.
Trusting someone else with your heart is always risky.
Sometimes, the pros surpass the risks.
But sometimes, all you can do is run for your life.

BLURB REED
Three men. Three stories.
A country music superstar. His manager. And the guy who doesn’t believe in love.
Reed Knight doesn’t believe in love. Thanks to his parents who sent him back and forth between Canada and the US growing up, he has put walls around his heart. Thick walls that no woman has ever broken through.
Career-driven, Reed has everything he needs in life: friends, a successful business, and pleasure on the side.
Yes, his life is complete. According to his own standards, at least.

But when she walks into his life, tornado-style, it disrupts everything he ever thought he knew.
Nothing matters anymore. Not the lock around his heart. Or his stupid decade-old rules.
Can Reed find it in him to love someone else, or will his icy heart stand in the way?
EXTRACT REED
Gilbert raised his hands in surrender and slouched into one of the two white leather chairs facing my desk. “You really think what you two have is purely sex?”
“I know it is.”
“That easy, huh?”
“Yep. You won’t see me propose or walk down the aisle anytime in the next century, so there’s nothing wrong with having a little fun on the side.”
“And what if Gabrielle develops feeling for ya? What if she falls in love with you? You know it’s a possibility, right? You look dapper. Women are shitty friends with benefits. They’re lovers. All of them. Sooner or later, Gabrielle is gonna expect some sort of commitment from you. Just wait and watch.”
Gilbert shrugged, smirking.
I dropped my feet to the carpeted floor, swiveled and leaned forward, my elbows propped on my folded legs, and straightened my back.
“There will be no commitment, no relationship, and absolutely no love involved. If the ins and outs of our arrangement change, then there won’t be an arrangement anymore. Simple as that.”

EXCERPT
HN touched my forearm, and I snapped out of my daze. I shook my head, blinking, rebooting my confused brain.
“Hello?”
“Sorry. Got lost for a moment. What did you say?” I straightened my back, projecting fake confidence. My insides had dissolved a long time ago.
“I said I’m going into town this afternoon. You need something? Groceries? A pair of boots? Anything?”
HN fixed me with a heavy stare. My organs failed. My breath caught in my lungs.
I opened my mouth and closed it a second later.
“Did you hear me? Pixie?” Warmth stirred low in my belly at the sound of his deep, husky voice. He narrowed the distance between us, his body grazing mine now. When he spoke close to my ear, I stopped breathing for a full minute. “So, do you need anything?”
“I—I’ll go by myself,” I said, my voice shaky and low.
“No offense, but the roads are icy, and your car will never make it up here on the way back. We’ll take my truck.”
“Excuse me, are you making fun of Miss Dolly?”
“Miss who—? Oh, crap, did you give your car a name?” HN raked his fingers through his already tousled hair sprinkled with snowflakes.
“Don’t look so surprised. Lots of people do.” I folded my arms over my chest and tipped my chin up. “Anyway, I bet your dick has a name, too. Not judging.” Why was I fixated on his penis? Damn it. Keep your thoughts to yourself, April.
“I—Never mind,” HN said before his eyes drifted down my body. His voice lowered. “What if my dick has a name? You—”
My tongue swept over my lips, and my heart pounded faster. I had no oxygen left in my brain to argue. HN’s palm brushed my shoulder, and I shut my eyes, breathing in his manly scent, the addictive mix of pine and cedarwood. Everything inside me screamed to kiss him again. His warmth reached my core. I leaned into his touch, bunting his hand the same way Bernice always did when I petted her.
“I…what?”
HN sucked in a breath. My body sizzled.
I squeezed my legs tight, my composure slipping away.
My neighbor, without doubt, the most handsome male specimen I’d ever laid eyes on—according to my sex-crazed hormones—clamped onto my forearms with both hands and flashed me a grin. My chest rose and fell in quick succession. I was panting like I just ran a marathon, even as my feet were glued to the snowy ground. I stepped forward, the gap between us shrinking. My breasts swelled. My lips tingled. My lungs idled.
HN pivoted on his heels and walked away.
“See you later, Pixie.” His long strides brought him inside his cabin in no time, leaving me speechless and spellbound.
Aching and needy.
The heat radiating from me could melt the freshly fallen coat of snow all over town.

Where the Stork Flies – excerpt

By Linda C. Wisniewski

Chapter One

The winter Regina arrived, I had a lot on my mind. My part-time job at the public library was going nowhere. My husband had left me over a crazy misunderstanding, and our 19-year-old daughter, who had always favored him, blamed me and followed him out the door. Lonely and confused by the turn my life had taken, I stumbled into the kitchen that morning and found the back door standing open, letting in a few flakes of snow.

Get a grip.  I slammed the door closed. A whimper came from behind me. I whirled around to see an old woman in a long brown skirt, loose white blouse, and a muslin headscarf. She stood beside my kitchen table, shivering. A scream escaped my throat and then hers, both of us yelling like a crazy banshee duet.

“Who the hell are you?”

She jumped back, knocking over a chair. Selene, my old gray kitty, meowed loudly and ran from the room.

“What do you want?” I shouted as she scuttled over to a corner, clutching a piece of cheese. Her wide eyes looked so terrified I felt for a second as if I were the intruder, not she. Her face was wrinkled parchment and her hair around the edges of her headscarf was gray, but her round cheeks, those small brown eyes above a long straight nose: I had seen them before.  On my grandmother’s face. A woman who raised me from the age of ten. A woman who had died over thirty years before. It was her. And not her. A queasy little wave traveled through my stomach.

“Who are you?” I said again, my voice shaking. I wondered if she was some sort of hallucination brought on by lack of sleep. My hands groped for the back of a chair.

She licked dry lips and held out both trembling hands, still clutching the cheese. “Przepraszam, Pani, she pleaded. “Prosze mi wybaczyc!”

A wash of pity flooded my heart. Her voice was soft and hoarse, and though I didn’t

understand her words, I knew their rhythm, the pattern of her sentence, the rise and fall and cadence. She spoke Polish like my Babcia, and my mind responded with words from my childhood to ask what she was doing.

“Co ty robisz?”

The old woman’s lips trembled. “Pani, mi wybaczyc,” she whispered and waved the cheese in her hands, still begging forgiveness as her gaze darted around the room as if she was expecting punishment to come from some corner.

I didn’t know how to say, Relax, it’s okay, so I grabbed another phrase from my childhood, the one that meant Hello.  “Dzien dobry. My name is Kat. Katherine.” I pointed at my chest, where my heart thumped a jagged rhythm. “Katarzyna.”

She nodded and positioned her feet on the floor as if ready to run.

BLURB
Lockdown Innit is a poetry collection of eighteen poems about life’s absurdities and frustrations during lockdown. Wherever you live in this world, this is for you. Expect humour, a dollop of banter and ridiculous rants here and there. Amongst other delights, witness the strange antics of a swan posing by a bin and two statuesque horses appearing like arc deco pieces in a field. Check out the violin player on a tightrope, or the cheeky unmentionables wafting in the lockdown breeze!
AUTHOR BIO
My alter ego is MJ – Mary Jane from Spiderman. I love superheroes!
On the 17th of November I was born, in Lion City: Singapore, (a passionate Scorpio, with the Chinese Zodiac sign a lucky rabbit.) My early childhood was spent in Hong Kong. My two enchanted daughters have almost flown the nest, but often return with a cheery smile to greet me.
During the day, I work in an international sixth form with students from around the world. I’m the meet and greet lady who welcomes them to their new college and issues them with late slips when they don’t get to their lessons on time!

Blurb:

I eyed the nearest “no trespassing” sign mounted on the fence about ten feet away. With all the surveillance cameras, he had to know I was out here. I was probably lucky the guy hadn’t had me arrested yet.

Another hour passed.

The sun was disappearing over the horizon now, darkness settling in. It didn’t look like I was going to be successful today.

With a heavy sigh, I gathered up my bag and rose to my feet, deciding to call it a day.

My skin prickled as something moved on the other side the fence.

I spun around, my heart smacking into my ribs.

The heavily-treed yard now deep in shadows, it took a moment for my eyes to take in what had appeared before me. Even then, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was looking at in the low light. He stood as still as the tree trunks surrounding him.

My hand flew to my throat, my eyes widening.

Gasping, I stumbled back, tripping over my own feet and falling into the underbrush, my bag landing beside me.

I tilted my head back, unable to tear my gaze away.

Ohmigod. Ohmigod. Oh. My. God.

Jealousy. Betrayal. Family secrets.
Appearances are everything in my family. We are the Strongs. Fame is our birthright. Music flows through our veins in a continuous harmony. Flaws are unacceptable.
When my parents got a good look at the freak they’d created, I was hidden away, my existence wiped out.
Until they discovered my secret.
Now I had something they wanted.
Taking it from me didn’t faze them. They believed they were entitled.
I was just a boy, unable to fight back.
So I did the only thing I could.
I vanished.
That was nine years ago.
Now they are back, and they want something from me again.
They send the sexy and oh-so-tempting Mia Bennett to persuade me, and I’m helpless to resist her.
Mia seems innocent in my family feud, but is she really?
I can’t be sure.
All I know is she makes me feel alive again. She gives me the courage to just be me. She’s the new inspiration behind my music, my heart’s own melody.
But something dark and twisted lurks close to home, and leaves me questioning who is friend and who is foe.
Now I am forced to make a decision that could well break me.
How far am I willing to go for the woman I love?

COMFORT ZONE BY STEPHEN BENTLEY
BLURB
There’s a killer lurking in all of us. Sometimes you just don’t know it.
Take Phil Mercer, for example, what dark secret from his past changes a decent man, and respected professional into a man with murder on his mind?
Down to earth Northerner, Phil Mercer, begins to question why so-called university friends failed to help him establish a practice at London’s Criminal Bar.
Despite that and colleagues’ professional jealousy, he goes on to achieve success as a fearless defender of society’s less fortunate until his career is threatened by events triggered by something completely out of his control.
Figuring his life and career are about to change forever, Mercer strives to find a way to right wrongs by inventing a new parlour game called ‘Comfort Zone.’
At a dinner party surrounded by colleagues he insists they all play the game. He introduces it after dinner as a ‘storytelling game.’
He adds – “the easy choice is not an option at all. What terrifies you? What scares you shitless? Be brave. Be reckless. You are among friends. What can possibly go wrong? It’s just a parlour game, right?”

EXCERPT FROM COMFORT ZONE
PROLOGUE
2017
She heard the footsteps and guessed the guy was about ten yards behind her. It must be a man. They are too heavy for a woman. Another few hundred yards and she would reach safety – her garden flat home. I swear, no more drug runs for Ben Turner, she thought. This is too risky. Her heart pounded faster. She could hear it thumping in her chest until the sound of her panting blocked it out. She could smell aftershave. It wasn’t her cologne, nor was it her breathlessness she could now hear. Before the lights went out, she thought, Fuck you, Ben!
When she regained consciousness her first sensation was movement. I’m in the boot of a car. She was unable to see anything. I must be blindfolded. She tried to check for a blindfold but trying to move her arms was futile. Her hands were tied behind her back and she couldn’t move her legs as they too were bound. Then she felt a searing pain in the back of her head and lost consciousness once more.
Clueless as to time, she knew she was in a strange room. It stunk of urine. In the distance she heard the low rumble of motorway traffic. Her head still hurt, her eyes unable to pierce the gloom, but she could see shadows. The blindfold’s gone. On trying to move, she heard a scuffling noise and knew she was tied to a chair. She heard a door open but was unable to see in the dark. Then she heard footsteps walking away and heard a second door open. A few moments later, a car engine started and the headlamp beams flooded both doorways and the room with bright light, penetrating the darkness. She was forced to shield her eyes from the light by tilting her head to the side, averting her gaze. Curiosity taking over, she scrunched her eyes and made out the figure of a man in front of her. A man dressed in black, wearing a ski-mask. He held a long knife in front of him. He cut the tape across her mouth before running the blade down her cheek. She felt the blood as it ran to the corner of her mouth, giving her the metallic taste of her own blood.
“Who are you?” she asked in panic. “Is this about the drugs? Here, have them.”
Removing his mask, the man in black said nothing.

The Heart Beats in Time, Song for a Lost Kingdom, Book III by Steve Moretti

BLURB

Two women connected by the same musical soul.

Two composers transposed across time into each other’s world by the mysterious forces of a priceless 18th Century cello.

In the final instalment of the Song for a Lost Kingdom trilogy, Adeena Stuart and Katharine Carnegie search for the music that neither can complete on their own.
Finding themselves living three centuries apart and each assuming the identity of the other, Adeena and Katharine must overcome their own unique challenges, all the while hiding the truth of who they really are from those around them.
Adeena is pregnant in Scotland following the slaughter at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. Her husband James Drummond and his brother John Drummond, are being hunted as Jacobite traitors by the revengeful butchers of King George’s Hanoverian army.
Sentenced to cruel deaths, they escape to Ireland only to find even greater danger in the ruthless cunning of Henry ‘Hangman’ Hawley who will stop at nothing to extinguish any further rebellion against English dominance over Ireland and Scotland.
Adeena’s one comfort is the Duncan Cello and her music that inspires all who hear her perform. The cello is her companion through battles, fires, storms and floods. It is perhaps the only thing she can truly rely on.
Katharine meanwhile awakes in the year 2019, confused by even the simplest technologies and overwhelmed by the strange customs of the modern world.
Pregnant from an unknown father, and uncertain about whether true love lies in the past or present, she finds respite in her music and the only thing familiar about this strange place – the Duncan Cello, now a prize artifact of the National Gallery of Canada.
Adeena and Katharine find a way to compose a score that reflects their turmoil in both their lives – ‘The Heart Beats in Time.’
Together they will see the story through to the final bars.

Song for a Lost Kingdom, Book III is a novel of music, history, and love that finds a way to conquer the barriers of time.
Curl up with a copy and lose yourself in this fast-paced adventure that will keep you hooked until the final page.

EXCERPT

Katharine stared at her reflection in the mirror. She was called ‘Adeena’ in this heavenly afterlife. Was the woman who stared back really her?

Katharine touched her pale cheek. It was warm against her soft fingers. She opened her emerald eyes wide, staring at their translucent clarity, dancing in the light as if they were teasing her with their secrets. She smiled, admiring the white straight teeth they had given her, and the long, copper-tinged hair, a reminder perhaps of her own time on earth?

“I’m Adeena,” she said to the reflection. “Adeena Stuart. And I live in heaven now.”

She laughed as she slipped on the clothes that her ‘mother’ had left for her. She dropped them off last night and said that in the morning she would return to take her home.

Home?

Somehow the thought of it made her eyes wet, but not in a sad way. She might be dead, but she was so thankful for all the happiness she felt for this place.

She wiped her eyes and surveyed the odd collection of garments that had been left for her. The most confusing was the corset – if that’s what it was. It was black and had two thin straps and cups that must be used to hold her bosom in place? There was also a tiny, sheer garment that seemed almost invisible. Were these the drawers ladies wore in heaven?

A fleecy bright crimson sweater and dark britches, fashioned out of some sort of flexible cotton or linen fabric, completed her ensemble. It was the type of clothing Jaqueline and Tara, the dark-haired one, wore whenever they came to visit. There were also socks and shoes that fit her feet perfectly.

When she was done, she sat down and waited for Jacqueline, Adeena’s mother, a spirited woman who always seemed pleased to see her. If Jacqueline’s role was that of maternal guide, so be it.

Katharine glanced at her cello in the corner. Tara had left it behind for her. It was the only connection to her old life and perhaps the reason why she made it up here in the first place. It was unlike all the magical devices in this world – the ones that glowed, and chimed, and must be powered by the spirit of God Himself.

The cello from Maestro Duncan was plain. It had no special power. She found her bow and pulled the cello between her legs. Without thinking, she slowly began to play the music she had been rehearsing at Kinnaird when somehow she slipped away and the world around her went dark.

As she played her unnamed composition, it flowed through her and took her far away from this place. All the strange surroundings disappeared, leaving only her and her music. She had found heaven.

Book excerpt:
Every crew member aboard the Veloz ran from stem to stern working tirelessly to patch every hole in the ship. The damage was critical to the point that nearly half the ship had been evacuated. With so little power available, compartmental force fields were inoperable, leaving only a single fire door between repair crews and the vacuum of space in many areas.
Not a single deck was spared at least some devastation, for as the ship’s superstructure twisted and contorted under heavy firepower, panels came loose and circuits overloaded throughout resulting in debris littering every room and corridor. The floors weren’t only littered with discarded paneling and blown circuitry, but also injured, dying, and dead crew members. The initial unexpected surprise attack caused the most death and destruction, taking over a hundred lives. Then as the battle wore on, further loss of life was inevitable.
The victory was Pyrrhic, but it was a victory, nonetheless.
